The Pink Squirrel is an attractor nymph originally developed by John Bethke for the spring creeks of the Midwest Driftless Area. This pattern combines a very textured, buggy body with a vibrant fluorescent pink hotspot collar. In addition to serving as a general attractor, the bright pink collar is known by anglers for mimicking a pregnant scud (freshwater shrimp) carrying eggs, which is a meal for hungry trout. The pink squirrel uses a weighted gold bead head to sink quickly into the feeding zone. It best works when run as the heavy anchor fly in a two nymph rig with a smaller mayfly or caddis trailer attached behind it and it performs at its best when target drifted through the deep pools.
